Essential oils are all the rage these days and while I didn’t initially believe in their benefits – I’m a strong advocate for them now – and here’s why.
**This post is in no way funded by Doterra Essential Oils. All views and opinions are my own.**
Until a year and a half ago, I was a believer in modern medicine, If anything was slightly wrong with me, I took a pill – whether it be ibuprofen, anti-acids, protein powder, or a health supplement. I thought natural medicine was an expensive sham and, honestly, it wasn’t really even on my radar.
Fast forward to the present and, let me tell you, that’s all changed. After spending 19 months taking super strong immuno-suppressants, I hate modern medicine. Okay, hate is a very strong word but a really dislike taking them.
These days it seems as if medicines do more harm than good. Granted, the medication I’ve been prescribed prevents my blood vessels from bursting – which is a good thing, I guess – (long story, click here for details) but they also cause hair loss, nausea, and other side-effects including a form of rare brain infection. EXCUSE ME?! In order to get better, I have to risk brain infection?! I know, the risk for that is super slim – but there is still a risk…and that baffles me.
Now that my eyes have been opened to the side effects of modern medicine, I’ve been researching natural solutions and found one that I love.
Doterra essential oils.
My lovely friend, Darya, introduced me to Doterra two years ago but I didn’t take oils seriously until earlier this year. I’m pleased to say that they’ve actually helped with my bout with HSP-Vasculitis!
Two years ago, Darya sent me some essential oils to help with my allergies. I had just moved to Oklahoma and was healthy – except for my strong seasonal allergies. Those cottonwood trees were killing me!
Darya sent a package with lemon and peppermint oils as well as Doterra On-Guard beadlets and TriEase Seasonal Blend soft gels. I would put drops of the oils in my palms, rub my hands together to activate the oils, and cup my hands over my nose and mouth as I inhaled through my nose.
And it worked!
I was quickly able to breathe again! My sinuses were cleared!
In addition to this, I took the OnGuard and TriEase as daily supplements to prevent allergies and support my immune system.
A couple months later, I completely forgot about the oils (sorry, Darya) – not considering ordering more until this past winter, when my HSP relapses became more frequent.
I reached out to Darya for advice and she sent me a roller bottle of frankincense and coconut oil with instructions to roll the oils on my spine and soles of my feet twice a day. The bottle contained 40 drops of frankincense (although it’s best to use 30 drops for adults without autoimmune illness) and enough coconut oil to fill the rest of the bottle.
Now, if I’m being honest, I wasn’t 100% sure how much it helped me at the time. I was frequently changing medication so I was relapsing on a regular basis due to my body adjusting to different treatments. This being said, I did notice I felt healthier overall when I used the oils.
I wasn’t able to tell if the blood vessels were affected by the oils but I did feel more like myself (pre-vasculitis) when I used them.
The best way I can think to describe it is to say I felt whole.
I’m naturally a very tense person but that tenseness is increased when I’m taking certain medications. Some make me shake. So, I get tense as a subconscious effort to stop the shaking. Some medicines prevent blood vessel issues but don’t do much to help with muscle pain. With pain comes tenseness.
When I used the frankincense and coconut oil roller bottle, I felt more relaxed. I was naturally less tense throughout the day. And I slept better!
After frankincense opened my eyes to the amazing benefits of Doterra Essential Oils, I started to research other uses for oils.
I bought a diffuser and started using lavender’s aromatic benefits to help me sleep. That stuff knocks me OUT.
I began taking my diffuser to work and mixing frankincense, lemon, and peppermint to relieve headaches and boost creativity.
Doterra’s Deep Blue Rub has changed my life when it comes to pain. That stuff is like an all-natural version of Icy-Hot and I love it!
I even drink wild orange oil in my water!
That’s the cool thing about essential oils – there are so many ways to use them!
You can ingest them orally (by putting drops directly on your tongue, in pill capsules, or in beverages), topically (by rubbing them directly on your skin), or aromatically (through directly smelling the oils or putting them in a diffuser for a slow release).
Now, I’ll be honest, Doterra oils can be pricy. Some are more expensive than others – so, I bought less expensive brands during a month when I was low on funds. I know, I know, I cheated on Doterra and I feel awful but, I only use non-Doterra oils for aromatic purposes. I refuse to use them topically or orally.
Many essential oil companies claim to sell 100% pure oils – but some of the cheap ones lie. They do have some pure oil in them (sometimes only one drop in the entire bottle – WHAT?!), but they also have pesticides and other chemicals that can harm your body if ingested. They are fine to diffuse into the air occasionally, but I prefer not to put them on my skin or directly in my mouth.
So, what makes Doterra so special?
Doterra oils are 100% pure – and that’s the truth. Their oils have been tested both internally and externally – translation: companies other than Doterra have tested the products, so this fact is objective and true. They are 100% pesticide and chemical-free. These highly-concentrated oils are potent and powerful yet safe and gentle. That’s what we all want, right?! Something that works effectively but is safe and natural. And, last but not least, my favorite part: Doterra Oils are sourced from around the world and use their profits to build schools in many communities – through the Helping Hands Foundation.
I don’t know about you but I’m a sucker for helping missions. If I have the choice to save money or spend a little bit more to help someone in need – I pick the more expensive route every time. If I’m fortunate enough to have that option, I want to use my resources to help others.
I’m still exploring the world of essential oils – but I can honestly say that I feel a million times better now that they are in my life, They help me prevent the side effects caused by the medications I have to be on in order to keep my immune system in check. I’m hoping to one day be completely off of strong medications and solely use natural treatments – but that will be a slow transition.
Have you ever used essential oils? What is your favorite oil and method of using it?
Would you like to see more posts about Doterra in the future? I have tons more to say but this post is already pretty long. 😛
