A few months ago, I was graciously nominated for a Liebster Award by Meiah over at My Crazy Hectic Life. I’m honored to receive this award—especially from someone as thoughtful as Meiah. This girl regularly inspires me with her health and lifestyle tips that are applicable to any phase of life. I wish I knew her when I was in college because that is her forte.
Anyway, the purpose of the Liebster Award is to build a community among bloggers. Bloggers nominate other bloggers and ask them a series of questions and the chain continues. The fun bit is that the questions change every time. So, if you get nominated twice, you can still engage with new bloggers without repeating yourself.
This is my first nomination and I can’t wait to get this thing started! Let’s go!
1. Where do you normally write?
You know, I bought a nice desk several months ago and the goal was to sit there and write but the couch is much more comfortable…. Honestly, it depends on the day. If I’m caffeinated and really in the zone, I sit at my desk. If I’m struggling to get the creative juices flowing, I sit on my couch. I try to only write on my couch if I need to elevate my feet (thanks to this fun auto-immune disease called HSP-Vasculitis); but that doesn’t always happen.
2. Do you pre-write or write just before you publish?
I always write in advance. Now, sometimes that just means that I write the blog post the day before I want to publish it; but I try to always give myself some space away from the piece before I do a final read-through and schedule it to go live.
3. What made you want to start a blog?
Ever since middle or high school, people had been telling me I should write more but I always ignored them and chose to focus on music. Fast forward seven years to when I was diagnosed with HSP-Vasculitis. It’s a long story but essentially, I was unable to perform for several months and was, for all intents and purposes, on bed rest. I got tired of constantly explaining my situation to people, so I wrote uplifting Facebook statuses to update everyone on my condition but also assure them I was going to be okay. I focused on the positive. My grandfather kept telling me I needed to write long form instead of just posting Facebook statuses; and one day I decided to give it a shot and Glitter & Grandeur was born
4. What do you do for fun?
Although I’m a full-time digital marketer, I actually have two degrees in music. So, singing is one of my biggest hobbies. I also enjoy reading, travelling, and spending time outdoors. Oh, and naps—can’t forget naps. I try to balance my naps with physical activity but it’s difficult. Before I got sick, I loved working out and I’m trying to get to the point where I can really focus on that again. It’s a process.
5. Are you a morning person or a night owl?
Neither. I hate mornings. I’m really whiny in the mornings. But I’m also not a night owl. Since my body is constantly in fighter mode, I get tired easily. I’m usually in bed pretty early. I’d say I’m an afternoon person—a mid-day motivator, if you will.
6. What is your favorite holiday?
My birthday! That’s a lie. 25 was the last time my birthday was my favorite holiday. So, this year I need to pick another holiday… I’m going to choose Christmas! Jesus, Christmas lights, and family time—what else do you need?
7. What is your favorite social media platform?
Oh jeez. I’m not sure how to pick… I’ve recently been having fun with Insta Stories so maybe Instagram is my favorite now? Although, Pinterest used to be my favorite… Can I pick two? Instagram and Pinterest!
8. How do you manage your time?
You know, I’m still struggling with that. I used to balance what felt like a million different responsibilities and hobbies. Now, I struggle to organize my (much simpler) lifestyle. I make a lot of lists but I need to work on an actual schedule. I’ll write a blog post about it when I figure it out. How’s that sound?
9. What is the coolest state or country that you’ve visited?
Italy. Definitely Italy. I spent a month in Rome performing two operas with Operafestival di Roma while I was in college and then visited Florence and Venice with my family. That was amazing. This photo was taken before one of our performances of “The Magic Flute.” I was in the ensemble of that show. The venue was amazing. We set up a stage in the courtyard of a gorgeous stone church. It was hot though. This photo was taken before I had to put on my long sleeve black shirt and face mask. Maybe one day I’ll share that photo with you.
10. What is the one thing you want people to learn from reading your blog posts?
I want my readers to be inspired to find positivity every day. Whether or not they learn how to do that from me is not my biggest priority. I just want to inspire someone to try. I want to spread light, joy, and positivity to others—or Spread Sparkle, as I call it.
11. What is your favorite color using Crayola crayons?
Robin’s Egg Blue. I’m not sure why. I’m just drawn to it. (Is that punny? Get it? I’m drawn to a crayon color… Moving on.)
And the Liebster Award Goes to…
I’ve been fortunate to come across some pretty awesome bloggers in the past few months and I can’t wait to introduce you to all of them!
First up, is my girl Sarah over at Okay Lift. Not only has she been a great friend the past few months, but this girl inspires me on a daily basis to pursue a healthier lifestyle. Okay Lift focuses on internal and external strength through fitness, mental health, and clean eating. Her healthy diet has gotten me back on the fruit/veggie smoothie train and I’m slowly working my way back into the gym after years of forced “rest days.” I also should point out that she took the photos featured in this post.
While we’re talking about health, I want to nominate Holly at Realistically Holistic. I’ve known Holly for several years now and she is one of the most motivated, compassionate, and positive people I know. Realistically Holistic is a great resource for eco-conscious living, fitness, and health. Another plus, is she keeps her topics budget-friendly!
Next up, we have Kaitlyn at The Big and Bright. Kaitlyn is a super star. This girl worked a full-time job, built an amazing photography business, and created her own blog. Plus, being a wife and dog mom. Kaitlyn writes about marriage—both before and after the ceremony—client features from her photography sessions and personal insights into her life. Her photos are calm, positive, and inspiring. Her writing leaves me with the same feelings. The Big and Bright’s brand is on. point.
Finally, we have Karlye at La vita divina. I had the joy of performing with Karlye several times and, let me tell you, this girl is a #bossbabe. She is an opera singer, rock star, feminist, and joy to be around. La vita divina focuses on fashion, beauty, and lifestyle posts. Karlye’s blog is another great resource for positivity and her Instagram is super fun.
That concludes my nominations! I could have listed a ton of other bloggers but I wanted to keep my list short so that I could tell you all about my nominees (without writing a super long post). Now, I get to reveal my set of questions. This is exciting!
